One Blouse, 6 Ways

Blouse x cardigan x skirt. This combination can never really go wrong. Although the outfit lacks color, it's all about the piping designs on the cardigan and skirt that makes them stand out.

White blouse x black skinny pants. I'm partial to tucking in everything, just so I can use my belts.

Blouse x culottes. Again, tucked in and belted.

Blouse x striped knit x white pants. When wearing the blouse under something, let the collar pop out and use the bow tie!

Blouse x skirt. Again, tucked in, belted and add accessories from head to toe. This was the 4th day I wore this blouse to work so I had to lose the bow tie or my students would think I ran out of clothes.

Blouse x no sleeve dress. This combo is perfect to wear to work with your favorite no sleeve dress. Best if the dress isn't a very contrasting color. Again, make sure collar and bow tie shows. (If the dress is too short, then wear white or black pants under! Make sure they're fitting and not baggy.)

I wore this white blouse for 6 days straight, last week and succeeded in getting my money’s worth and probably succeeded in grossing out some people at school. I’m sorry.

Anyway. Here are the take-away points for wearing this oh-so-functional white blouse.

  • Peter Pan collar – ups the cute factor, and can be an accessory when worn under something
  • Removable string bow tie – technically gives you two blouses for the price of one and ups the cute factor again
  • Tuck it in and belt it – makes us look more ladylike and stylish

And some picks around the web. There are no bow ties, but just buy string of similar fabric as your blouse from the store. (And no, I don’t get paid for this although it’d be nice!)

Disneyland

On the third day of Golden Week, we all went to Disneyland! It’s ironic how I’ve been to Tokyo Disneyland 3 times in 3 years and the LA Disneyland not even once albeit having lived in California for 18 years. It’s okay though – I hear Tokyo Disneyland is more compact (less walking!) and cleaner.

I don’t think one can ever be too old to go to Disneyland. I love you Walt Disney.

Our group…

I really wanted to try this! Do they have this flavor in the U.S. too?!

This kid was really tired.

On Mark Twain's boat!

I got my turkey leg while waiting for the Electric Parade! So good!

Cinderella's Castle at night. Look at that beautiful moon.

Chichibu Mountain Sheep Park

For Golden Week, my bf and I visited his friends in Saitama Prefecture and we went to Chichibu Mountain Sheep Park (Hitsuyama Kouen) to see their famous chiba-zakura flower hills.

I’ll let the pictures do the talking.

Hiking up a mountain to get up to them flowers... and no, I'm not in pain from hiking in heels at all. That expression is totally just for show.

View from the top of the mountain... more mountains and floating clouds! Beautiful!

With boyfriend's friend's girlfriend

Whenever I see red torii gates, I always have to take a picture under them. I think it's cuz it's such an orthodox Japanese symbol so I want to collect as many of them as possible, just in case I return to the US.

Finally got to the flowers!

These flowers are called shiba-zakura, or mountain phlox.

There are fashion bloggers who look great in every picture, and then there are those named Thoa.

Look at that mountain.

The view from the other side.

Notice the little girl with the rainbow raincoat behind me. Adorable!

It started to sprinkle so I took out my umbrella, and then it stopped, and then everyone wanted to use it as a picture prop!

And that was the second day of Golden Week.

Food, Bread & Sweets in Shibuya

Met up with my ex-co-worker/travel buddy/best friend in Japan/sister in Harajuku and walked to Shibuya today. Long story short, we didn’t want to wait in line for 12 hours at “Eggs n’ Things” (pancake restaurant from Hawaii) or eat lunch at 4pm at “bills” (deemed world’s best breakfast by NYT) so we had a simple lunch at a family restaurant (similar to diners in the US).

Then we walked from Harajuku to Shibuya, which is only a 20 minute walk! I totally recommend it cuz you get to take in the sights and bustles of both major Tokyo hotspots! Our plan C to go to the newly opened department store (Shibuya Hikarie) didn’t work out either cuz there were lines that stretched for blocks just to get into the building. Ridiculousness, but totally understandable if you’ve been here long enough. I swear waiting in line should be listed a national pasttime, up there with eating sushi and bowing.

But thankfully, God loves us so we visited a popular bakery in Shibuya and got seating without much waiting (15 mins). This place is legit cuz I saw it on TV. Any restaurant featured on Japanese is pretty much a winner.

After, we parted ways and I went to do some “shopping” but ended up looking at food inside Tokyu Food Show inside Tokyu department store. The “Food Show” is the name of the basement floor filled with some 40-50 gourmet food vendors from traditional Japanese sweets to cakes to obento to gyoza, and all the wonderful Japanese foods you can think of.

I will let the pictures do the talking now.

Noodles in a clear pork broth with 300g of vegetables at the family restaurant! Super delicious!

Apple pie from Boulangerie Patisserie Viron in Shibuya. Outside was crispy and easily cut with a butter knife! They even warmed it up for us so this tasted wonderful!

Chocolate bread from Boulangerie Patisserie Viron in Shibuya. I usually don't like this stuff cuz the bread isn't very sweet and it's usually dry. However, this particular chocolate stick bread had the right texture, softness, and mild sweetness. Wonderfulness!

My cute ex-co-worker. How old do you think she is?!

Ignore the hair, please. Instead, don't you love how I still look semi-skinny even while wearing a knit with big stripes?

Look at the blueberries on that cake! Amazed.

More yummy fruity cakes made eerily similar and with beautiful precision.

Pudding in an egg! Japanese "pudding" resembles flan more than actual pudding. It holds its shape very well and is very custardy.

Roll cakes are also super popular over here. The key is to make the cake soft but moist, and the cream light and only mildly sweet.

The little red dress

This is one of my absolute favorite dresses. I got it at a vintage store in the States and fell in love with it right away! Like all my dresses, the length is not appropriate for school, so I wore a pair of white pants under and voila–!

Red dress x pink knit cardigan x white pants

And this is how the dress looks like sans pants. The ruffles and flare is absolutely adorable! Thank you to the previous owner who altered this dress and then sold it so I can treasure it.

2-day work week

I love starting work on Tuesdays and knowing I’ll only have to work only tomorrow and then have the rest of the week off.

The yet-to-be-worn clothes in my wardrobe are dwindling down to only a handful. In there was this dress that’s too short to be worn at school, so I just tucked it in and wore it as a blouse. Added bonus in that it gave my skirt more volume!

White dress worn as a white blouse x cream cardigan x blue pleated skirt

And here's what the dress looks like when not tucked in. I bought this in Korea while studying abroad there. Good times!

Children’s Day

Monday was a holiday and start of Golden Week (a 4-day quarter-continuous national holiday in Japan!). Why is it only quarter-continuous? Because 3 days are continuous (May 3, 4, and 5) and one is on April 29th. And since I’m a teacher, asking for a holiday for the rest of those days isn’t possible (><)

The only holiday out of those that get some decorations, though, is Children’s Day. It’s basically a day to celebrate the health and happiness of the children in our households, but it’s more geared towards boys since girls have their day already on March 3rd (Hina Matsuri).

My local temple went all out with these carp banners. They’re usually hung to swim sideways but these are hung to swim up! Amazing! According to legends, carps that can swim upstream become dragons, so these carp banners symbolize the parents’ wish for the children (boys) to become strong and healthy. On a totally related note, Magikarp evolving into Gyarados totally makes sense now!

Enoshima Beach & Shirasu Rice Bowls

On Saturday, boyfriend and I took a half day trip to Enoshima Beach. It’s our go-to place when we don’t know where else to go cuz 1) it’s the beach, 2) it’s 15 minutes away and 3) boyfriend wanted to go on his new (old) motorbike.

An Enoshima specialty is shirasu (semi-dried baby sardines). They don’t really have a very distinct taste so I’m not sure why people are crazy about them. But like Japanese people, when there is a line, I am tempted to wait in it! So hungry and cold, bf and I waited for about 40 minutes to eat at Tobiccho, a famous Enoshima shirasu rice bowl restaurant with humongous serving sizes. Their specialities are their rice bowls topped with 2 pieces of mixed tempura and shirasu. Final verdict: delicious, but come with two and order just one bowl.

Black blouse x beige cardigan x beige culotte with pink accessories

Enoshima beach!

The Nomadic Cafe truck which serves curry and coffee.

Japanese version of our LA food trucks e.g. SUPER mini pizza truck! Look at how there's a pizza oven in the truck also!

Entrance to Enoshima Shrine

Seafood kakiage (mixed tempura) with shirasu rice bowl. We waited a good 30 minutes for this, but it was definitely worth it!

I ordered the Enoshima set: mixed tempura, raw shirasu, shirasu and egg soup, rice with dried shirasu, pickled shirasu, shirasu chawanmushi, shirasu tofu. Yea basically lots of shirasu

Me and my Enoshima set. I got some pretty obvious stares from the people sitting next to me when this tray came out...

Shonan Festival, Chigasaki

Boyfriend and I went to Shonan Festival in Chigasaki, a city near the beach (think Santa Cruz). The city put on a festival at the beach. This means delicious but overpriced food stands, local bands, a beauty contest, “how far can you throw your flip flop” games, separate-your-garbage stations, and absence of crazy, drunk people.

After, we went to one of my favorite cafes near Enoshima Beach, Santo Cafe. More than the food, it’s the atmosphere of being near the beach. Boyfriend and I shared the “berry berry parfait”, “rare cheesecake” and “strawberry white mocha latte”. All were super yummy and super good for my mental well-being (physically, well…)

These burgundy shorts were really difficult to pair with anything so I googled “burgundy shorts” and realized white blouse pairings like this were really popular. Duh.

Getting ready for lunch on the beach!

Lunch was a Hawaiian combo: locomoco (Hawaiian style hamburg) and garlic shrimp (a disappointment). My bf really liked the chips though since we don't have them here in Japan!

This girl was part of a rock band. They performed for a good 30 minutes and she gave quite a performance. I'm sure some alcohol was involved before the show cuz this girl was all over the place - jumping off the stage onto tables, throwing water bottles, microphones, lying on the stage...

The beauty contest for "Miss Chigasaki." My favorite #8 won cuz she had a beautiful smile and had some good hula-ing goin' on!

Yakisoba with fried egg. I thought this was Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki for a second... definitely would have jumped on that.

One of my favorite cafes!

Berry berry parfait with vanilla ice cream, sorbet, frozen raspberries and fresh strawberries, and corn flakes! This was amazing!

This rare cheesecake was soft, creamy, a little sour and a little sweet. Good, but nothing too spectacular here.

Strawberry white mocha latte - this was actually pretty delicious with strawberry crumbles or whatever the heck it is. It was wayyy smaller than it looked in the picture though

Boyfriend's new second-hand bike he bought for $1000! I'd say that's a pretty good deal!

And what do you think about the captions on the pictures? Are they helpful, or do you rarely even read them? Tell me so I know whether to write them or not!

Woman in Black

Black skirt on black blazer over black blouse. Cuz some days, I just can’t be bothered with colors.

And it’s Friday! For some reason, my Friday classes are always the most fun. Maybe it’s cuz 2 of them are with 7th graders who still haven’t had the joy of learning sucked out of them. Anyway, YAY 3-day weekend cuz the 30th is a substitute holiday for Showa no Hi.

Oh, and I totally got preoccupied with this stupid “puzzle” for a good hour today. Hopefully you don’t have to take that long. And I just googled it cuz I was getting frustrated and ready to commit seppuku.
